The two ETH particle physicists and Pioneer Fellows Jannis Fischer and Max Ludwig are listed on the 2018 "30 Under 30 Europe: Science & Healthcare" of the American business magazine Forbes, which showcases "ground-breaking millennials" in various felds.
In 2016, Dr. Max Ahnen and Dr. Jannis Fischer received a Pioneer Fellowship, a stipend jointly funded by ETH Zurich and the ETH Zurich Foundation. The goal of these fellowships is to help young ETH researchers to independently develop highly innovative products or services that can be exploited commercially and/or for the benefit of society.
The goal of Ahnen and Fisher is to develop a new and cost-effective positron-emission-tomography (PET) device dedicated to imaging and diagnosing brain diseases. The two physicists, hosted in the group of Prof. Günther Dissertori at the Institute for Particle Physics and Astrophysics, have made substantial progress in that direction, with the invention of PET scanner "the size of a vintage hair dryer that's 10 times less expensive than current models", as Forbes writes. That achievement, the Forbes jury found, was impressive and they included Ahnen and Fisher in their "Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe List 2018", which lists in total 300 "top young leaders, inventors and entrepreneurs" in ten categories, picked from almost one thousand online nominations.
