To understand the principles of brain function and to implement these in artificial systems

Researchers at the Institute for Neuroinformatics explore the principles according to which brains work and implement these in artificial devices that interact intelligently with the world. The questions of how the brain processes information, gives rise to behavior; the way how these principles can be used to build new technologies are among the greatest intellectual challenges of our time. The answers to these questions will have a large influence on medicine and the development of intelligent systems. The answers lie at the interface between the disciplines of physics, biology, engineering, mathematics, computer science, and cognitive and medical sciences.
