The 2020 external pageMERAC Prize for the best PhD thesis in observational astrophysics has been awarded by the European Astronomical Society to Dr. Jorryt Matthee for his 2018 PhD thesis at Leiden University, and specifically for his "spectacular results that have transformed the way we see and understand distant galaxies across time". The award is made every two years.

Dr. Matthee is currently a Zwicky Fellow at the ETH Zurich, where he continues to produce exceptional and innovative research work. The Zwicky Fellowships were established in 2002 by Professors Lilly and Carollo to bring outstanding young researchers to the ETH to carry out independent research within the ETH astronomy community. Dr. Matthee exemplifies the great success of this program.
