National Centres of Competence in Research
The Department of Physics is often host to National Competence Centres in Research (NCCRs), which are an initiative of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). Members of the department also participate in NCCRs led by other Swiss institutions.
Planet S

The NCCR PlanetS provides an interdisciplinary research programme dedicated to the study of the origin, evolution and characterisation of planets. Established by the SNSF in June 2014, PlanetS brings together researchers from the Universities of Berne (leading house), Geneva (co-leading house), and Zurich as well as of ETH Zurich and EPFL.
SwissMAP – The Mathematics of Physics

The NCCR SwissMAP is an interdisciplinary research centre at the crossroads of mathematics and theoretical physics, hosted by the University of Geneva (leading house) together with ETH Zurich as its co-leading house. The research network also includes the University of Zurich, EPFL, the University of Bern and CERN.
SPIN – Spin Qubits in Silicon

The NCCR SPIN is hosted by the University of Basel and aims to make a major contribution to researching and developing quantum computers to create the basis for a new information processing technology. A total of 19 research group heads are involved: seven from the University of Basel, six from IBM Research – Zurich, four from ETH Zurich and two from EPFL.
