National Centres of Competence in Research

The Department of Physics is often host to National Competence Centres in Research (NCCRs), which are an initiative of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). Members of the department also participate in NCCRs led by other Swiss institutions.

Genesis

The NCCR Genesis investigates the origins and conditions of life in the universe. Launched in July 2026, it brings together interdisciplinary approaches from astrophysics, chemistry, geology and biology. Researchers from various Swiss universities are involved in Genesis.

Muoniverse

The NCCR Muoniverse explores and harnesses the properties of muons. It brings together researchers from the natural, engineering, and heritage sciences to link muon-beam technologies with particle and materials research, driving innovative applications in fields such as quantum materials, renewable energy, environmental monitoring and cultural heritage. Muoniverse started in May 2026.

SPIN – Spin Qubits in Silicon

The NCCR SPIN is hosted by the University of Basel and aims to make a major contribution to researching and developing quantum computers to create the basis for a new information processing technology. A total of 19 research group heads are involved: seven from the University of Basel, six from IBM Research – Zurich, four from ETH Zurich and two from EPFL.
