Research area

Werner Schmutz is involved in the following Space Projects: Principal Investigator of the instrument PREMOS, a multi-channel filter-radiometer flying on the French satellite PICARD, which operated from July 2010 until April 2014, when the satellite was switched off. PREMOS monitored the Total Solar Irradiance and observed the solar radiation in UV and visual wavelengths. PREMOS was the first space experiment that measured a calibrated and fully SI traceable value of the Total Solar Irradiance. He is Co-Investigator of the experiment LYRA on the ESA Technology-satellite PROBA 2, PI of CLARA on Norsat-1, to be launched April 2016, and PI of DARA on PROBA-3 with launch date in 2018.

He is Principal Investigator of the SNF Sinergia project "Future and Past Solar Influence on the Terrestrial Climate".

Werner Schmutz is since 1999 director of the Physikalisch-Meteorologischen Observatorium Davos und Weltstrahlungszentrum (PMOD/WRC). In 2002 he was awarded the title of adjunct professor at the ETH Zurich. He is astronomer, investigating the solar radiation and its effects on the terrestrial climate.

He was born on August 29, 1952 in Zürich. Dates of his academic Career: 1979 diploma in Physics, 1984 doctorate in Natural Sciences and 1995 habilitation at the ETH Zurich.

He was president of the Siwss Commission on Space Research and Swiss delegate to COSPAR. He was also president of  the International Radiation Commission, a commission of IAMAS and member of the Comité consultative de photométrie et radiométrie of OICM.

In 2015 Werner Schmutz was awarded the International Kristian Birkeland meda.
